Holy Ice: Bridge to the Subconscious
Published in Paperback by Galde Press, Inc. (June, 1992)
Authors: Frank Dorland and Joseph Alioto
Average review score:

Not just another book on quartz crystals...
I remember reading this book when it first came out, and was impressed with it then. Recently, I purchased another copy and was reminded why I liked it so much. Mr. Dorland was a well respected art authenticator with much experience in research techniques. This background served him well, as he lets the reader follow the progress of his initial interest, and eventual in-depth research, into the synergistic effects of, and some techniques and practical uses for active rock quartz crystals.

The book starts with his examination into the background, and possible historical uses of the famous Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull, which he studied for six years. He is the one who brought the skull to the Hewlett-Packard lab to be studied. He documented his efforts and observations and it makes interesting reading. This led him to close his successful business and devote his time to researching the historic and traditional uses of electronic quartz crystals. What stands out for me, is how he ties traditional, shamanic / magical practices in with the modern 'scientific' usage of quartz in electronic devices, etc. He paints a convincing picture for there being a logical reason, (and not just superstition or placebo effect) why specific types of crystals have consistently been used the world over by 'healers and adepts' for augmenting and accelerating the effects of healing, meditative states, etc. If you have an open mind, but don't buy every idea that comes 'from the ethers' as being valid, this book will appeal to you. He makes a good case for all but the most dedicated of skeptics to take another look at how quartz crystals can be useful. For those people who already use crystals or are interested in possible 'metaphysical' properties this is a must read for anyone of rock quartz. You may learn a thing or two.

Excellent! A book on rock crystal from a scientific view...

Finally an actual book without mumbo jumbo on ROCK CRYSTAL. How to use it and why it works.
Photos, examples and how to acquire one of the crystal carvings.

I have read it several times and find something new each time.

A touch of Mysticism with alot of fact should be the way a book is written on such an important subject.

Holy Places of the Buddha (Crystal Mirror, Vol 9)
Published in Paperback by Dharma Publishing (March, 1994)
Authors: Dharma Publishing, Tarthang Tulku, and Elizabeth Cook
Average review score:

The most detailed guide available
This is probably the most detailed and thorough guide available to the sacred sites of Buddhism in South Asia, where it first developed. Today this land includes not only the various regions of India, but also Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and "Holy Places of the Buddha" includes all of them. Each site is given a full description, including its place in Buddhist history and its condition today, and much of the text is accompanied by helpful maps and photographs. It would take a very long review just to list the many sites that are covered. The real value of this book is in providing a background understanding of the Buddhist holy places, but separate guidebooks (such as the Lonely Planet guides) will be required for instructions on how to get to each place. For anyone interested in Buddhism or South Asian history, and especially for anyone interested in making a pilgrimage to any of the sacred and historic places of Buddhism, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

where the Buddha lived the events and locations
This book was a friendly companion on my trip to India and Nepal. It fully describes events of the Buddha's life that occured at each location. In doing so it brings these Holy Places to life both then and now.

Much better than Element K's and at a better price!
Excellent as training materials for a course! I've been running training courses for over six years and find these to be about the best training manuals available and at a great price.

Great Intro to Crystal 9
I recently purchased 10 copies of the Hammerman manual for a Crystal 9 course I gave. I've been using Crystal since Version 1, so a few things surprised me about this manual. First, I was able to read through it without getting bored - it's very easy to read and there's actually a plot to follow that kept my interest. Second, I actually learned several things about Crystal even though I thought I knew just about everything there is to know (I've used it almost every day for years.) Most important, the 10 people I trained loved the course and the manual - I received several unsolicited compliments on how well written and easy to follow the manaul is, so it made me look good.

There are many good reference books on Crystal, but if you are new to Crystal and simply want to learn how to create some reports and don't want to spend a lot of time, the Hammerman book is a great way to get started. I'm looking forward to their Level 2 manual due out soon.

Poor Katie
This book was great! I bought it used from this site and the book was wonderful. Katie and Sabrina are my two favorites and this book didn't disappoint me. I recommend everyone should read it.

Very Sweet
I liked this book very much. I love every Girl Talk book I have ever read. I am still trying to find more books. Well, this book was interesting. It was about Katie Campbell and her friends volunteering for a youth program. Katie, her crush, Scottie Silver, and her stepbrother, Michel, are teaching young kids the basics of playing ice hockey. Katie is looking forward to the team's first scrimage, but she ends up in the hospital due to a serious health problem.

Les Aventures de Tintin: Les Sept Boules de Cristal (French Edition of the Seven Crystal Balls)
Published in Hardcover by French & European Pubns (June, 1990)
Author: Herge
Average review score:

The first half of another great Adventure de Tintin
First, be aware that the exciting Tintin adventure that begins in "Les Sept Boules de Cristal" ("The Seven Crystal Balls") is concluded in "Le Temple Du Soleil" ("Prisoners of the Sun"). As our story begins, Tintin is on the train reading how the Sanders-Hardiman Ethnographic Expedition has returned a trip to Peru and Bolivia. The gentleman reading over Tintin's shoulder predicts trouble, drawing a parallel between what happened with the curse of King Tut-Ankh-Amen's tomb and these explorers violating the Inca's burial chambers. "What'd we say if the Egyptians or the Peruvians came over here and started digging up our kings?," asks the gentleman; What'd we say then, eh?" The comment is important, not only because tragedy does strike the seven members of the expedition as they fall prey to the Boules de Cristal of the book's title, but because one of the themes that Hergé develops in this particular epic is the respect Europeans should have for other cultures and ways of life. This point has been implicit in many of Tintin's adventures, but it is a dominant element this time around. Assisted by his good friend Captain Haddock, Tintin becomes embroiled in the mystery, which takes a more personal turn when Professor Tournesol is kidnapped. One interesting twist in this story is that Milou actually ends up causing more trouble than Dupont and Dupond. There is a seriousness to what happens in "Les Sept Boules de Cristal" and "Le Temple Du Soleil" that reflects a significant turning point in Hergé's work, laying the ground work for his greatest tales, the two-part Moon story and "Tintin au Tibet." The ability of Hergé to grow as a storyteller over the course of his distinguished career is impressive and these stories deserve the accolades they have received and the affection with which they have been embraced by generations of readers.

Entirely too good
This book weaves a fanciful tale of seven men who bring back an Inca mummy to Europe after a long research expedition. One by one each of the seven is struck by a peculiar illness - they all seem to be fast asleep, except that at regular intervals they have wild fits before relapsing into their strange slumbers. Tintin and Captain Haddock are determined to crack this new mystery concerning the crystal fragments found on the floor near each of the victims, and the illness itself. But when their friend Calculus is kidnapped, Tintin and Haddock set out determined to find him and bring him back - even if they have to cross the world to do it. This book is one of the finest Tintin stories - well worked out and very suspenseful. The atmosphere is rather fearful at times, with only occasional humour to lighten it up. However, it is a fine story and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. I also highly recommend the sequel to this story, "Le temple du soleil", also excellent.

The lost resort : the story of Crystal Springs, its hotels and water cures, Yates County, New York
Published in Unknown Binding by Heart of the Lakes Pub. ()
Author: Lucile Peterson Macera

I am the author's daughter....
Description from back cover: "In the fall of 1939, a young hunter and his two companions were roaming the overgrown fields about five miles southwest of Dundee, between Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake in Yates County, New York, when one of them stumbled upon a mystery that led him a merrier chase than any rabbit ever could. Entering a semi-circular clearing with the intention of looking for rabbits in a nearby wooded area along Big Stream, the hunter suddenly noticed a peculiar odor. Literally following his nose for about twenty feet to the bank of the creek, he saw a rusty pipe thrusting above mats of tangled weeds in an otherwise isolated area. Since the pipe was emitting a stream of sparkling water, the hunter called his friends so they could all refresh themselves. Using their hands as cups, they tried to drink the water, spit it out, and wondered if they had been poisoned. Far from slaking the young man's thirst, the water only whet his curiosity. Why did it tast and smell so strange? And why was it flowing from a rusty pipe in the middle of nowhere? The curious young hunter was Merlyn ("Bud") Wheeler, Jr., who had lived most of his life near Dundee. Between that fall of 1939 and 1943, Bud pursued the older residents of the area until he found at least six who were able to help solve the mystery. The help came primarily in the form of old-fashioned glass plate negatives and stereoscopic photos that provided visual evidence of a resort and sanitarium that had developed around a mineral spring accidentally discovered in 1864. Because Bud was working as a commercial photographer, he had the expertise to reproduce from the old glass negatives and stereoscopic photos an extensive pictorial history of a once popular, but lost resort--Crystal Springs. After 1942, the demands of marriage, World War II, and supporting a family kept Bud too busy to pursue his interest in what turned out to be a whole village that had completely disappeared except for a rusty pipe. But his interest did continue, and he carefully accumulated any information that came his way. In 1977, Bud turned over his substantial collection of Crystal Springs photos and other material to the Dundee Area Historical Society. The Society's director, Shirley Knox VanDyne, joined the search for more details and verification of an era in the vicinity's history that was little known to current residents. Since it is unlikely that any individuals with firsthand knowledge of Crystal Springs still live, it is fairly certain that, had Bud Wheeler and Shirley VanDyne not collected these materials when they did, much of the history of Crystal Springs would have been lost forever. The three authors have shared a desire to preserve the photographic and material evidence that Crystal Springs did once exist. Their aim in this book has been to document as fully and accurately as possible a colorful cross-section of Yates County history that will be useful to historians and of interest to present and future residents of Yates County and neighboring counties. The authors hope that you, the reader, will soon find yourself transported over the portals of Chapter 1 into an exciting time in the history of Yates County, New York."

My ABC Bible/My ABC Prayers

Authors: Crystal Bowman and Stacey Lamb

A lovely gift for a new baby
I just bought "My ABC Bible/My ABC Prayers" for my four month-old, intending to use it during his bedtime routine.

It's two books in one. "My ABC Bible" provides a Christian noun for each letter of the alphabet -- "H is for dear Hannah, who prayed to God each day. Then God gave her a baby boy. God listens when we pray." "My ABC Prayers" provides a lovely short prayer for eah letter of the alphabet -- "R is for rain. Lord, I praise you for the rain that makes the rivers flow. Thank you for the rain you send to help the flowers grow." And the illustrations are really sweet!

This would make a great gift for a new baby, especially if you've visting and want to bring a little something for the baby or if you want to include a small gift along with a meal for the family.

Beautiful!
I ran across this book accidentally and was delighted that I found it. I think the book is absolutely fantastic and you don't have to be a child to enjoy it. I am buying one for each of my grandchildren and one for myself. The book is fun to reread over and over. The book helps teach a child about people and places in the Bible through poems. It also teaches the ABC's and the prayers for each of the letters are so beautiful and are simple for a child to be able to understand. Fantastic job! I love this book! I can't stop reading it! It should be on every child's night table.

Peterson's Sat Mat Flash: The Quick Way to Build Math Power for the Sat-And Beyond
Published in Paperback by Petersons Guides (April, 1997)
Authors: Michael R. Crystal, Petersons, and Mark Moscowitz
Average review score:

SAT Math flash - a compact math workbook
SAT Math flash is a great book if you are the type of person I am. Someone who knows how to do all the math, yet doesn't score extremely high on the math section. This book primarily tests your ability to reason math, not your knowledge that the area of a circle is pi r squared (like some SAT prep books do). This book is a great workbook. It is not divided into sections like Barron's workbooks, so you can go through as if you were taking a real test and find out what's wrong. The explanations are in depth yet concise. The questions are in the medium-difficult range. This book is perfect for someone who needs to figure out what's wrong with their reasoning, not for someone who needs to learn the actual math. It is also recommended that you already have some strategies in mind when you use this. This book is comparable to taking an SAT math section, then having all the answers and explanations there for you, but it focuses on the harder parts of the test...pick it up, you'll like it.

Terrific preparation for the math portion of the SAT.
SAT Math Flash provides a very accessible guide to the variety and difficulty levels of the math problems on the SAT. Described as "including" two complete tests, in fact representative sections of typical questions in the 3 SAT math formats--multiple choice, grid-in, and quantitative analysis--comprise the entire book. Consequently the reader gains practice with the content as well as the style of the SAT. Each right-hand page contains 2 math problems; on the back of the page are clear explanations of the answers. These solution guides are the best I've seen. The author avoids cutesy tricks (that carry their own burden of one needing to remember how they work), and sticks with straightforward math, algebra, and geometry. The author's explanations are so clear and make such simple sense, that they give the reader tremendous reassurance. In addition, the author refers to the frequency of a type of problem and cites the concepts and formulas behind every problem. I rated SAT Math Flash at 9 rather than 10 only because the book is so good that, at 142 6 x 9 pages, I wish it were longer. Still, the other books are so huge in their gross attempts to cover too much, that they are depressing, overwhelming, and slick in their explanations. If one could buy only one prep book, I think this is it. I suspect that if one did the problems in this book over and over until the concepts and formulas were embedded, one could go into the SAT with confidence--certainly half the battle! But author Crystal is so good, I'm looking for his other books: SAT SUCCESS and PANIC PLAN FOR THE SAT.
